What is the primary objective for learners regarding functions and their graphs, according to the provided material?
The primary objective is for learners to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of functions and their graphs.
How do the learners classify functions based on their graphs and equations?
Learners classify functions into types such as linear, absolute value, quadratic, square root, and cube root based on their graphs and equations.
Define what a function f is, according to the provided definition.
A function f is defined as a relation between two sets, the domain and the range, such that for each value in the range, there corresponds exactly one value in the domain.
Explain the characteristic of a one-to-one relation using an example from the source material.
A one-to-one relation is characterized by each x-value in the domain having only one corresponding y-value in the range. An example is the set of ordered pairs {(0,0), (1,1), (2,2), (3,3)}.
Describe a many-to-one relation and provide an example from the source.
A many-to-one relation occurs when multiple x-values in the domain correspond to the same y-value in the range, yet each x-value still has only one corresponding y-value. An example is the set of ordered pairs {(0,1), (1,1), (2,3), (3,3)}.
Why is a one-to-many relation not considered a function?
A one-to-many relation is not considered a function because it violates the definition of a function: for at least one value in the domain, there is more than one corresponding value in the range. For example, in {(0,0), (0,1), (2,2), (2,3)}, x=0 has two range elements (y=0 and y=1).
How can the Vertical Line Test be used to identify if a graph represents a function?
The Vertical Line Test states that a graph represents a function if no vertical line intersects it more than once. If a vertical line intersects the graph at two or more points, it indicates that a single x-value corresponds to multiple y-values, meaning it is not a function.
Which of the following equations represents a linear function?
A
Identify the type of function represented by the equation f(x) = 67.
The equation f(x) = 67 represents a constant function, where the output value remains the same regardless of the input.
What type of function is f(x) = (x + 2)(x - 2)?
The equation f(x) = (x + 2)(x - 2) simplifies to f(x) = x^2 - 4, which represents a quadratic function because the highest power of x is 2.
